My own experiences of film media consumption illustrate wider patterns and trends in audience behavior because we consume film media similarly. Before the pandemic, my peers and I would go to the movies as a social gathering. We would do this as a way to strengthen relationships through watching movies that were found to be “popular” and interesting, so that no matter who you are, if you saw the movie, you have the ability to comment your thoughts and feelings about it in school. Not only that but before the pandemic and even now during the pandemic, the rise of streaming services (like Netflix and Hulu) has affected me and my peers. My peers and I are now using new mediums, our phones, and laptops, to consume film media by steaming videos, television shows, and movies in any situation and for any occasion. With this pattern of consumption, there have been some consequences. The sales of DVDs have dropped significantly and downloading movies and television shows have become a societal norm. If this consumption of film media were to continue as it is, some forms of film media will be put out of business, while others will thrive as the new popular form of film media.

For the original magazine cover, the image I used came from the "migetmomma" website ("Light And Fluffy Lemon Raspberry Cupcakes Recipe • MidgetMomma"). For the new magazine cover, the image I used came from the Canva website (Home - Canva). For this revision, I decided to go with a simple, rustic look. I choose a simple blue stained wood image as the background because it looks professional and colorful enough. I did this because, in my original magazine cover, I thought the background image was too colorful, and it took away from the article names on the magazine. I also changed the font and letter color because I wanted the words to match the overall theme of my food magazine. Not only that, but I deleted and spaced out the name of the articles on the cover because, on the original magazine cover, it was too busy and, because of this, it made looking at the magazine cover very difficult. All the images that were used on the cover will be replaced with images I take myself in the future. The continued development of digital media technology has significantly affected media institutions and audiences. The development of digital media has affected media institutions by putting some of these institutions out of business. Since digital media has become more apparent and widely popular, many print media companies have lost popularity and have either been put out of business, or are surviving paycheck to paycheck. Also, in many European countries, local television has been discontinued due to the decrease in popularity and the increase of the inhabitants watching their preferred content via streaming services. The development of digital media has affected audiences by allowing them to watch a multitude of shows on a vast medium of different devices. However, with the integration of this new technology, audiences are becoming wary of what to believe. This is due to the ability to search for content that could be real or fake, and the only person who knows is the person who created the content.
I integrated technologies by using both Word and Canva when designing my magazine cover, table of contents, and double page spread. When I was designing my magazine cover, I used Word. Using this program was exceedingly difficult because the image that I wanted to use as the background would cover the text that I added, as well as it was nearly impossible to space my text evenly since there were no guides on the page to help with placement. The other program I used when designing my magazine table of contents and double page spread was Canva. I liked using Canva because it allowed me to place items evenly on the page with their guides. Not only that, but it allowed me to change the background colors and designs with ease.
The images that are used in both the before and after of my magazine double spread will be replaced as soon as I am able to take the images myself. Photos all came from the "Canva" website (Home - Canva).
My production skills have developed throughout this project by having a greater understanding of colors as well as how to use fonts appropriately. My color understanding has increased because before, I did not know how to properly choose colors that complemented each other to make a beautifully designed magazine. However, now I know all about analogous, monochromatic, split complimentary, and double split complimentary colors, and how to properly implement them to make a professional looking magazine. Also, before I did not understand that having many different fonts on a document or magazine was extremely distracting, but now I understand that you have to choose one to two different fonts for a document or magazine so that it looks professional and organized.
How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?2/2/2021 My product engages with the audience by showcasing appealing desserts that one would want to eat. This would cause the person to want to buy the magazine because they are interested in what the dessert is, and they will want to follow the recipe so they will have the ability to enjoy the dessert. This will cause the person to understand that you do not need to be a chef to make these desserts, but a person who has the time and the money to make them.
My product will be distributed as a real media text as a printed magazine. I will send my magazine to an online printing service (i.e. Printingcenterusa.com) to have them print copies so that I can distribute them. The printed magazine can then be distributed in stores, so a large variety of people can see and buy the magazine. Or people can go directly to my website to gain a subscription so that the magazine can be sent directly to their home. Because the pandemic has caused all of us to stay home, having a website will be extremely helpful for those people who want to bake my magazine’s recipes, but they do not want to leave the house to get a copy at the store. My product does not challenge any conventions. My cover looks similar to most other food magazines. Since I am creating a desert/food magazine for the normal person, the only convention that could possibly be challenged is unusual flavor pairing in desserts. With this in mind, my magazine will be very conventional, not unconventional.
My product does not represent any social issues; however, it does represent social groups. A social group that this would represent is “foodies”. “Foodies” are a group of people who enjoy looking at, creating, and eating food. With this in mind, they would represent a social group that would like my magazine because they would like to see the recipes and images of the desserts inside my magazine to see if they would like to try the desserts. Also, this product would appeal to the middle class because they tend to have more free time and have enough money to create these desserts. In the past ten years, many independent media companies sold themselves to large corporations. These large corporations bought most of the independent companies, and because of this, they have majority media ownership. With the media being controlled by very few people, there are many issues that have been raised with media ownership and funding in contemporary media practices. Among these issues are media biases, limits on the diversity of ideas, and small companies not being able to advertise their products in this modern world.
To begin, one issue raised by media ownership and funding is media bias. As the corporations become larger and more powerful, they have found ways to control the media in their favor. The ways that the companies control the media is by using inclusion, revision, and omission biases. The bias of inclusion is when a company uses positive or flattering coverage to make their company seem better. The bias of revision is when information is edited in order to take out certain information that could harm the company. The bias of omission is when information is dismissed in order to protect the company. With the corporations using these types of biases, they become extremely powerful since they can control what others see. They seem to be untouchable. Another issue raised by media ownership and funding is the limits on the diversity of ideas. For example, Disney and Pixar. Pixar used to have extraordinary ideas which they would turn into movies. They would come up with movies that seem to be from one’s own dreams. However, since Disney bought Pixar, their movies have become drab and similar. They have the same plot, just in a different context. Not only that, but Disney’s movies for the past couple of years are riddled with virtue signaling. Since Disney is using virtue signaling, all the companies they bought, like Pixar, are now using virtue signaling in them as well. Finally, another issue raised by media ownership and funding is that small companies cannot advertise their products in this modern world. Large corporations own the majority of the media, and they control what is being advertised on their streaming service, movie, or television station. If a small company is trying to sell their product to a large corporation, but the product does not match their ideals, the small company will find it difficult to try and advertise their product somewhere else since there are few companies left. Not only that, but if a small company wanted to advertise their product on the large corporation’s streaming service, movie, or television station, and they do not have a lot of money, if the corporation loves and wants the product, they will either buy out the company or ask for a small percentage of sales to allow the small company to have their product advertised. In conclusion, there are many issues raised by media ownership and funding in contemporary media practice. Among these issues are media biases, limits on the diversity of ideas, and small companies not being able to advertise their products in this modern world.
The images that are used in both the before and after of my magazine table of contents will be replaced as soon as I am able to take the images myself. Photos all came from the "Canva" website (Home - Canva). I changed the image of a piece of meat with a fork on it to multiple pictures of desserts so that it was better suited for a dessert/food magazine. I changed the colors from red to purple and blue because I thought those looked more suited for my magazine. I changed the website name from "WWW.RAWSOMEDIET.COM" to my magazine's website "WWW.DDSWEETS.COM". I also removed the text that stated who took the image. I finally spaced the new words and rectangles so that they fit better on the page How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?
My product does not use or challenge any conventions. In addition, it does not represent social issues. My product does, however, represent middle class families. Since I am showcasing a desserts magazine, the only people to whom this may appeal, are those who are in the middle class because they have the time and money to make these desserts. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text? My product engages with the audience by showing very appealing desserts that a person would possibly want to eat, and as the audience reads further into the magazine, they see how easy the recipes are, and realize that anyone can create it if they have the time and money. It would be distributed as a real media text by a printed magazine, and an internet article that has an attached step-by-step video of how to make the desserts. |
